While the history and trajectory of abstraction is tied to Euro-American modernism, artists in India began to engage with the form as early as the 1950s, even as figuration remained a more dominant mode in Indian painting. From this time, artists’ explorations of abstraction were innovative and independent of Western history, developing an important lineage that extends across mediums to the present.
