Performance art constitutes works that are created by an artist’s actions or directions. Performance arose as an art term in the West in the 1970s. In India, painters including Bhupen Khakhar pioneered forms of performance art through staged “happenings,” though experimental and performance practices began to take on greater visibility and importance in the 1990s and beyond.
