About the Artist
Genius Chakma
Genius Chakma’s (b. 1993) journey as an artist has its roots in the investigation of lines and the exploration of installation. Both tangible and intangible forms and structures serve as threads weaving through his creative exploration. The central theme of his artistic expression is the act of assembling and reinstalling objects. Each piece of work is not a static entity but a transitory composition that captures the essence of activities related to the surrounding environment. In his process, he seeks connections between the real and imaginary worlds, striving to establish a link with nature and objects using all of his creative outlets. His art is always dominated by an organic process, with representations that emerge as profound sources of inspiration for both indoor and outdoor settings. He is drawn to the transformative power of installations, which hold the ability to reshape physical spaces and, in turn, reshape perceptions. His works are included in significant galleries and private collections. The intersection of conceptual sculpture practices and industrial stoneware methods provides a rich ground for artistic experimentation and exploration. As a sculptor working primarily with stoneware and papier-mâché, my research aims to bridge the gap between these two worlds, combining the time-honoured craftsmanship of stoneware with innovative sculptural forms and concepts. By pushing the boundaries of traditional stoneware techniques and engaging with contemporary sculptural trends, I seek to create dynamic and thought-provoking artworks that challenge assumptions about the possibilities of sculptural expression. Through my research, I hope to not only expand my own artistic practice but also inspire and educate the next generation of sculptors, fostering a deep appreciation for both the history and future of sculpture as a vibrant and evolving art form.
